The Santa Barbara Modern Quilt Guild recently held its first meeting of the new year. This was also our first meeting in a new space, due to the fabulous Fabric Quarter quilt shop closing its bricks-and-mortar storefront. It’s hard to come by meeting space that meets our needs, but luckily one of our members can get us access to her community’s clubhouse complete with comfy chairs and couches! I also designed a logo for the group (as seen to the left) based on a thoroughly modern block done by one of our members, Karen. We didn’t have quite as many show and tell pieces as usual, maybe due to the holidays, but what was shown was gorgeous as usual!
Liz brought a few in progress projects that she’s been playing around with after being inspired by Alissa’s visit to use more solids.

Cathe showed us a couple hexagon potholders she put together with Malka Dubrawsky’s pattern.

Katherine recently finished this masterpiece primarily using Anna Maria Horner voiles.

Lou Ann is working on a beautiful quilt top using aboriginal prints in conjunction with orange, pink, and purple solids and batiks.

Plus, Wendy from the Fabric Quarter brought some new fabric bundles for everyone to ooh and aah over.

Can’t wait until next meeting!

I’m pretty excited about the second Project Modern Challenge from the Modern Quilt Guild. The challenge is to create a quilt using only tints, shades, and tones of a single color! I looked to the Fresh Modern Quilts group on Flickr for some inspiration, as seen above. There actually weren’t many truly monochromatic quilts — modern quilters rely heavily on white sashing! I have a color and loose design in mind, so we’ll see if I actually get my act together and finish it before the March 31 challenge deadline.
At the last meeting of the Santa Barbara Modern Quilt Guild, we were thrilled to have Alissa from Handmade by Alissa stop by as a guest speaker. As one of the co-founders of the Modern Quilt Guild, she shared the reasons behind the guild’s creation and the plans for the guild going forward, her thoughts on modern quilting, and some insights into the behind the scenes life of a popular blogger, quilter, and book author. She also brought loads of quilts to share. Even though her quilts are impressive when viewed online, they’re even more gorgeous in person!

The quilt below is similar to one featured in her upcoming Block Party book, which features blocks created by a group of quilters using a color and design theme.
This one was featured in the 2010 International Quilt Fest: Quilt Scene magazine.

One interesting thing about Alissa’s quilting is that she’s moved almost entirely away from prints as she’s progressed as a quilter. This definitely has me inspired as I start thinking about some new quilt designs. Thanks to Alissa for sharing her time and expertise with us!

I recently finished my biggest quilt to date! It was a Christmas present for my younger sister and inspired by the purple color scheme in her room. The design is loosely based on Elizabeth Hartman’s charm squares baby quilt with bigger squares and criss-crossed. I’m still having issues with perfect 1/4 inch seams which resulted in not-totally-lined-up strips and with basting, but overall I’m pleased with the final product!
My local quilting store, The Fabric Quarter, is closing its brick-and-mortar shop — so sad! The good news for us local quilters is that everything in the store is now 30-40% off, so I took the opportunity to build my stash.
I’m obsessed with grey and yellow at the moment, so I’m collecting fabrics for an eventual quilt.
I couldn’t resist this bundle of Anna Maria Horner Innocent Crush!
Super cute holiday fabric — don’t know if I’ll whip anything up for this season, though.
Plus, some initial progress on a new quilt. Lots of purples and aquas!

This is my block for this month’s Santa Barbara Modern Quilt Guild challenge. I was part of the team to choose the fabric, including some retro-y prints by Michael Miller, and come up with the theme, which was circles. I’m excited to see what everyone else came up with!
I’ve been thinking about making some labels for my quilts, so I thought it would be fruitful to look for some inspiration. Here’s what I found.

There’s a lot more label inspiration in the flickr group Quilt Label Fun!
